Theere are two systems, metric and imperial.
The metric bases everything in multiples of 10. The basic measurement is a centimetre which is 10 millimetres long. 100 centimetres equals 1 metre, 1000 meters equals 1 kilometre. Metric also has grams and kilos wher 1000 grams equals 1 kilogram and 1000 kilograms equals 1 tonne. Area is measured in hectares, 100 x 100 metres
Imperial measurements are based upon the inch (2.54 centimetres) and the foot is 12 inches. 3 feet make up one yard (91.5cm). 1760 yards make 1 mile (roughly 1600 metres). As for weight, you have ounces (about 28grams) pounds, made up of either 12 ounces (Troy, equals 373grams) or 16 ounces (avoirdupois, equals 454 grams). Then there is the stone made up of 14 avoirdupois pounds. Next is the ton which is 2240 pounds (1016 kilograms). area is measured in acres, which is 4840 yard2.
As you can see the metric measurements are easier to use and remember.
